The hospitality and fine dining industry has evolved tremendously over the past century, blending tradition with modern experiences. Guests now seek more than just meals; they crave memorable settings, historic ambiance, and culinary artistry. As cities grow and cultures merge, establishments that preserve history while innovating gastronomically are finding their place in this changing landscape. In Helsinki, one such landmark has stood the test of time, offering both history and a modern culinary experience.
Katajanokka Kasino has become a symbol of timeless elegance, merging Finnish traditions with contemporary dining. Its story reflects resilience, adaptation, and a commitment to excellence. From its early days as a Russian officers’ casino to its current status as a premier restaurant and event venue, the Kasino continues to enchant visitors with its rich heritage and carefully curated gastronomy.
From Russian Officers to Finnish Legacy.

Originally designed by A. Nyberg and likely completed in 1913, the Kasino was built for the Russian officer corps. Its early years were marked by grand celebrations, billiards, carom, and card games. Guests experienced the charm of a luxurious officers’ casino, and the building quickly became a hub of social activity in Helsinki.
The political turmoil of 1917 changed the Kasino forever. Russian sailors briefly controlled the building during the revolution, followed by the Red Guards in 1918. German officers then occupied it for a short period before the Finnish officer corps took over in 1919. This period cemented the Kasino’s role as a historic symbol, intertwined with national defense and the city’s military history.
Transformation into a Culinary Destination.

The Kasino underwent significant renovations after the wars, introducing iconic spaces such as the Marski, Korsu, Sailor, and Jäger cabinets. These spaces preserved the elegance of the building while adapting it for modern use. By the 1970s, under the management of Leo Salonen, the restaurant began gaining a reputation for quality dining experiences.
Subsequent operators, including Arctia Oy, Scandic Hotels Oy, and Royal Ravintolat Oy, helped refine the restaurant’s offerings. In 2018, it became part of the NoHo Partners Group. Today, Katajanokka Kasino combines its historic charm with contemporary Finnish cuisine, offering guests versatile meeting and event spaces alongside unforgettable gastronomic experiences.
Preserving Heritage, Crafting Experiences.

In collaboration with the Finnish Heritage Agency, the Kasino underwent a major renovation led by architect Jorma Silvennoinen. The restoration returned the building to its original colors and architectural style, honoring its rich history while adapting to modern needs.
Today, Katajanokka Kasino offers a unique combination of heritage and hospitality. Guests can enjoy elegant event services, traditional Finnish dishes with a modern twist, and the ambiance of a century-old building. From weddings to corporate events, the Kasino continues to be a space where history meets contemporary lifestyle, inviting everyone to become part of its ongoing story.
